Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Klauka.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Lisa. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started the company in 2005 when I was just 20 years old. I knew I wanted to work with animals, and pet sitting was a perfect fit. I love pets and I love people and my business has allowed me to work with both. I have currently had over 13 wonderful years serving my clients and their fur babies and I love it! I now have a team of amazing pet sitters who help me serve my clients, and my clients love them as well.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I didn’t have a single client for the first five months of opening my business! That was really rough. I tried mailing fliers to nearby neighborhoods, with no luck. I advertised on Craigslist, with no luck. But I wouldn’t give up. And I’m so thankful I didn’t! Just persevere if you know it’s what you want to do, as I did. Another obstacle has been misunderstandings with clients and dealing with unkind people (though that is rare, as pet lovers are typically wonderful people!).

what should we know about Pick of the Litter Pet Sitting? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We provide in-home pet sitting including daily visits while people are at work our out of town or overnight or live-in services. The live-in service is something not a lot of pet sitting companies offer, and clients love it! Knowing someone is watching over their home as well as their pets provide utmost peace of mind. Something else is just the number of years we’ve been in business and the reputation we’ve built across the Internet (five-star ratings on Yelp, Google, Angie’s List, etc.). We provide excellent customer service all-around!

Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
Both Pet Sitters International and National Association of Professional Pet Sitters have tons of resources for pet sitters just starting out and they have online forums and Facebook pages to network with other pet sitters and get feedback on any questions or issues that arise in the business.

Pricing:

  • Visits starting at $25
  • Overnights starting at $75
  • Live-in starting at $115
